Norwich Film Festival has announced a special screening of the Oscar-winning film Shakespeare in Love for its opening night, bringing a touch of cinematic history and local heritage to the big screen.

The event, sponsored by the Holkham Estate where the film’s closing scenes were filmed, will take place
on 11 November at Norwich’s Cinema City, followed by a hybrid Q&A with director John Madden and lead actor Joseph Fiennes.

Shakespeare in Love won seven Academy Awards following its release in 1998, including Best Picture. The film tells the story of a young, struggling William Shakespeare (Fiennes) who finds his muse in Viola de Lesseps (Gwyneth Paltrow), igniting the inspiration Romeo and Juliet.

Madden will appear in person for the post-show session, while Fiennes will participate virtually from the set of his current filming project. The event will be hosted by film and culture critic Hanna Flint.

The 2024 Norwich Film Festival runs 11-24 November. The Festival is now its 14th year, and features several compilation screenings of short films plus a number of feature-length presentations. Venues include Cinema City, Norwich Theatre Playhouse, and Norwich Puppet Theatre.
